Thrown into the IM one night along with Lee. Ends up taking on a leadership role that she doesn't really want.

Author's opinion: Erin is a very smart girl. She thinks quickly, but she doesn't follow her instincts. She feels emotions deeply, but doesn't show them easily. I love her quick mind and ability to be laid back even in the worst of situations. There are feelings for Lee, because whenever she sees him, it's like a wave of emotion washes over her.

Lee Chatham

Best friend: Erin

Thrown into the IM one night along with Erin. Ends up with a relatively decent position, not as a leader, but as a prominent follower.

Author's opinion: Lee is a very sweet guy. His feelings are shown most of the time. Though we don't see him much in the series except for the most important parts, he is always noticed. He cares a lot for Erin. He's smarter in some ways while lacking in others. He can get uptight in certain situations, unlike Erin. He respects her "laid-backness" and admires her in ways she'll never know.

Applied for the IM and was accepted. After a few skirmishes, she is sent to the IM's home planet for reeducation.

Author's Opinion: As the series progresses, we find out more about Rak'it. She still has some anger issues, but instead of getting mad, she jokes. Her feelings are well-hidden. I admire her brains and computer skills.

Forced into the IM by one of her planet's leaders because of her reputaton.

Author's opinion: Nothing is one of my favorite characters. She's so smart and isn't afraid to show it. Though very hard on Erin at the beginning, she has taken a liking to the human female. She is very skilled with various types of technology, even though she came from a planet with very little. She has a calculating mind, and does feel emotion. She loves to fight; she always has and always will.

Born into a murderous species, stowed away on a cargo ship heading to the IM.

Author's opinion: Nmati is a very caring character. She's mostly quiet. She's skilled with computers, just not in the same way Nothing is. Nmati likes to start at the beginning of a program and work through it, while Nothing likes to just figure out all the holes in the program and use them to her advantage. Nmati's feelings are hidden from others, though she does show some whenever asked about her past. She balances out the group, giving it a more moralistic edge.

Author's opinion (updated): Nmati is actually a very mean person hiding under a caring exterior. She kills without remorse, which is shown in "Tides of War".

How do I know all this?
I live their lives every night, in my dreams. One night, I'm Erin. Another night, I'm Nothing. Sometimes I switch characters randomly throughout the night. I know my characters well. I can tell you what they would feel given almost any situation. I know, I wrote them, but they've evolved from where they started. They have their own distinct personalities, their own distinct feelings. And to be able to experience them firsthand is a wonderful gift. This series is a pleasure to write. I haven't written anything before where I have been so in tune with my characters. I hope it brings a different aspect to the story and that you all enjoy it.
